Goldenwest Credit Union to Transition Leadership in July 2026
OGDEN, UT: November 20, 2025 – The Board of Directors at Goldenwest Credit Union has appointed current Goldenwest Executive Vice President, David G. Butterfield, to serve as the next President and CEO, effective July 1, 2026. This appointment comes following the retirement announcement earlier this year of current President and CEO, Kerry Wahlen.
Dan Musgrave, Goldenwest Board Chairman said, “We are confident that David is well prepared to lead the Credit Union and advance Goldenwest’s strategic goals for years to come. As a Board, we are excited to welcome him into his new role as President and CEO.”
Chairman Musgrave went on to explain, “Over the next several months, Goldenwest will transition the President and CEO responsibilities from Kerry Wahlen to David Butterfield. We fully anticipate a seamless changeover when David assumes the role in July.”
Wahlen’s retirement comes after nearly four decades of remarkable contributions to Goldenwest Credit Union. Mr. Wahlen earlier this year announced his intended retirement for June 30, 2026. “We are most grateful to Kerry for his professional and personal dedication to Goldenwest,” said Chairman Musgrave. “All those who associate with Kerry know that Goldenwest is part of his DNA. His leadership has made Goldenwest one of the best managed and most successful credit unions in the nation.”
Wahlen began his tenure as President and CEO in January 2012, ushering in a new era of strength, growth, and innovation for Goldenwest Credit Union. Under his leadership, assets have expanded from $775 million to nearly $4 billion, membership has grown from 83,000 to more than 206,000, and the branch network increased from 18 offices to more than 55 locations across Utah and Idaho. He founded the Goldenwest Insurance Services division, which today manages more than $72 million in premiums across commercial, personal, and health insurance lines. Kerry led and negotiated mergers with USU Credit Union, Healthcare Credit Union, and, most recently, Ascent Credit Union.
“It has been my greatest honor and privilege to be associated with Goldenwest members, volunteers, and employees during the last 40 years,” said Wahlen. “I am positive that Goldenwest will continue to experience tremendous success under the capable leadership of David Butterfield.”
Butterfield brings 21 years of credit union leadership experience to the CEO role. Prior to the merger with Goldenwest, he served as President/CEO of USU Credit Union. Since joining Goldenwest’s Executive Leadership Team in 2013, he has led key operational areas including the USU Credit Union division, consumer and real estate lending, branching, business services, financial wellness, and asset recovery.
Butterfield holds a Master of Business Administration from Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Management and a Bachelor of Science degree from Utah State University.
He has served on numerous boards, including the Utah State University Board of Trustees, Utah State University Alumni Association, Logan City Planning Commission, and the Fullmer Legacy Foundation. A former State Representative in the Utah Legislature and Cache County Republican Party Chairman, he continues to champion public service and engagement. During the 2022 Utah Legislative Session, he led Utah State University’s Government Relations Team in an interim capacity, securing long-term funding for the University’s new School of Veterinary Medicine.
“I wish to thank the Board of Directors for their trust and support, Kerry Wahlen for his mentorship and leadership, and our members for their loyalty,” said Butterfield. “Goldenwest is incredibly well positioned for a strong and bright future. I look forward to working with our talented and capable team to advance our mission and deliver exceptional value to our members for years to come.”
