Goldenwest and Ascent Credit Unions Announce Intent to Merge

OGDEN, UT: December 1, 2025 – Goldenwest Credit Union and Ascent Credit Union have announced their intent to merge, creating one of the strongest financial institutions in northern Utah and Idaho. Upon completion, the combined organization will operate 55 branches, hold approximately $4 billion in assets, and serve more than 215,000 members.

Both institutions were founded in Ogden, are headquartered in Weber County, and share long-standing legacies of financial strength, community involvement, and member-focused service. The proposed merger will expand convenience, value, and long-term stability for members while deepening each organization’s longstanding commitment to local communities, including Weber State University.

“Our highest priority is ensuring every member feels supported through this transition,” said Kerry H. Wahlen, President/CEO of Goldenwest Credit Union. “For Ascent members, this merger provides access to more than 50 additional branches, a broader suite of financial products, and enhanced digital services. For all members, it strengthens our ability to offer competitive rates and exceptional service well into the future.”

“This merger is a return to our roots—backed by the expanded resources and strength of Goldenwest Credit Union,” said Brock Mortensen, President/CEO of Ascent. “It’s an opportunity to deepen our partnership with the university, make our founding members proud, and continue our mission of supporting students and the broader community.”

Ascent Credit Union, originally established as Weber College Employees Credit Union in 1957, has served generations of Weber State University students, alumni, faculty, and staff. To honor this heritage, Ascent branches will return to the Weber State Credit Union brand and operate as a division of Goldenwest.

The merger is subject to a favorable vote by Ascent Credit Union members and standard regulatory approvals. Systems integration is anticipated in 2026. Until then, both credit unions will operate independently with no changes to day-to-day services.

Members with questions regarding the merger may contact the Goldenwest Member Contact Center at 801-621-4550 or the Ascent Help Center at 801-399-9728.
