Celebrating 90 Years
Goldenwest Credit Union proudly marks 90 years of service this month, a milestone made possible by the loyalty and trust of our members. From humble beginnings in Ogden during the Great Depression to becoming one of Utah’s largest financial institutions, Goldenwest’s story has always been about people helping people.
Founded on May 13, 1936, as the Ogden Railway and Depot Company Employees Federal Credit Union, Goldenwest began with just $10.50 in assets. The early members of the Credit Union demonstrated remarkable vision and resilience. Savings accumulated slowly, and members sometimes waited for funds to become available for loans.
Ninety years later, Goldenwest serves more than 210,000 members through 50 branches across Utah and Idaho and manages $4 billion in assets. While much has changed over nine decades, our purpose has remained the same: improving the financial lives of our members.
This anniversary is especially meaningful to me personally, as it also marks an important leadership transition for the Credit Union. On July 1, 2026, David Butterfield will become Goldenwest’s fifth President/CEO as I retire after 40 years with the organization, including the past 14 years serving as President/CEO.
To commemorate this milestone, we released a special anniversary video featuring reflections from both David and me. As only the fourth president in Goldenwest’s 90-year history, I have been honored to help guide the Credit Union through a period of significant growth while working to preserve the not-for-profit cooperative that has defined us.
Like those early railroaders, I remain optimistic about the future and the continued impact Goldenwest can have on our members, employees, and communities. It has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to spend my career serving this organization and our members.
As we celebrate 90 years, I am grateful for the people who built Goldenwest, the employees and volunteers who continue its mission today, and the members who make our success possible. Our future is bright, and I am confident the Credit Union will continue to honor its legacy of service, strength, and helping members succeed financially for generations to come.
